Belvedere Castle is a Victorian folly designed by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould in 1869. The word “belvedere” means “beautiful view,” and it sits on Vista Rock, one of the highest natural points in the park. The Central Park Conservancy cares for the building, and the National Weather Service has long kept instruments on its roof. This guide is independent and is not run by the park.

What you can see

  • Turtle Pond at the foot of the castle, home to turtles, herons and, in season, water lilies.
  • The Great Lawn to the north and the Delacorte Theater, where outdoor shows are staged in summer.
  • The Ramble, the wooded area to the south, a favorite for birdwatching.
  • Skyscrapers of the Upper West Side and Fifth Avenue visible beyond the trees.

Getting there on foot

From the south, walk through the Ramble from Bethesda Terrace (about a 15 minute walk). From the east or west sides, enter at 79th Street and follow the paths toward the center. It is a good midpoint on a walk from Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge to the Great Lawn.

When to visit

Late spring and autumn colors make the best photos; early morning is the quietest. The stone steps and terraces can be icy in winter.
