Governors Island is a 172-acre island in New York Harbor, about 800 yards south of Manhattan. For most of the 20th century it was a military base; today it is a park with historic buildings, art spaces, lawns and a hilly landscape built for views. This is an independent guide and is not run by the island’s operators.

Our top pick: 60-Min Statue of Liberty and NYC Skyline Cruise

Getting there

  • From Manhattan: the public ferry leaves from the Battery Maritime Building next to the Staten Island Ferry terminal in Lower Manhattan. The crossing takes about 7 minutes.
  • From Brooklyn: a seasonal ferry runs from Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 6. Pair it with a walk through Brooklyn Bridge Park.
  • On busy summer weekends, go early: boats fill up by late morning and return queues build in the evening.

What to do on the island

  • Walk or cycle the loop. The promenade circles the island with constant harbor views, and there are no cars.
  • Climb the Hills. Landscaped hills at the southern end rise up to about 70 feet and give wide views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn.
  • See the forts. Fort Jay and Castle Williams date from the early 1800s and are looked after by the National Park Service.
  • Picnic and relax. Hammock Grove has shaded lawns and, in season, food vendors and pop-up art.

Best time to go

Late spring and early autumn have mild weather and thinner crowds. Summer weekends are lively but busy. Go on a weekday if you can.
