People cycling and walking on a drive in Central Park in summer

Central Park bike rental and bike tours

A bike is the easiest way to see all of Central Park in one go. Rent one and ride the loop yourself, or join a 2-hour guided tour that stops at the highlights.

The park drives make a loop of about 6 miles and have been free of private cars since 2018, so they are shared by cyclists, runners and pedicabs. Ride counterclockwise, stay in the bike lane and keep off the footpaths.

Rules to know

  • Ride on the park drives only, counterclockwise.
  • Stop at red lights at crossings; pedestrians have the right of way.
  • Children’s bikes and tandems are available at most rental shops; ask about child seats when booking.
  • Lock your bike if you stop for a walk: Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge are footpath-only.

Not into pedaling? A pedicab tour covers the same sights while someone else does the work.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to bike around Central Park?

The full loop drive is about 6 miles. At a relaxed pace with photo stops, allow 1 to 2 hours. Guided bike tours usually take about 2 hours.

Which way do you ride in Central Park?

Counterclockwise, in the direction of traffic on the park drives. Bikes are not allowed on the footpaths.

Do I need to book a Central Park bike rental in advance?

Not usually on weekdays, but booking online fixes the price and the pickup point, which helps on sunny weekends and holidays.

Are e-bikes available?

Yes. Several rental shops and guided tours offer e-bikes for a higher price, useful for the hills at the north end of the park.
