Horse-drawn carriages have worked Central Park since the 1850s. Today the stand is on Central Park South by Grand Army Plaza, a few steps from the Plaza hotel. Carriages carry up to four adults and follow the park’s drives past the Pond, the Mall and Bethesda Terrace. This page is an independent guide.

Our top pick: Guided Central Park Horse Carriage Ride

What the ride covers

A standard route stays in the southern end of the park, on the drives near the Pond and the Mall. Longer, private rides go deeper into the park. Drivers narrate landmarks and film locations as they go.

Agree the price first

Always confirm the total: the city sets maximum rates, but pricing is easy to misunderstand at the curb. Ask for the full price for the whole carriage and the length of the ride before you get in.

Booking online gives you a fixed price, a set duration and a rating you can check first.

Is it for you?

It is slow and relaxed rather than a sightseeing marathon. It suits couples, older visitors and families with young children. Dress warmly in winter, as the carriages are open to the air. If you would rather not use horses, a pedicab or bike is a good alternative.
