The Roosevelt Island Tramway has carried commuters since 1976, but it doubles as one of New York’s cheapest sightseeing rides. The cabin lifts off beside the Queensboro Bridge, rises over the East River and arrives on Roosevelt Island in around four minutes, with views of the Upper East Side, Midtown and the bridge. This guide is independent and not run by the operator.

Our top pick: Roosevelt Island Walking Tour with Tram Ride

Riding the tram

  • Board at the Manhattan station at East 59th Street and Second Avenue.
  • Pay with the same card or MetroCard you use for the subway.
  • Sit or stand by the windows. Cabins hold a good number of passengers, and the Midtown skyline views are best from the window side facing Manhattan.
  • Go outside commuter times (weekday rush hours) for a clearer window spot.

What to do on Roosevelt Island

The island is long and narrow, about two miles, with a car-light waterfront promenade.

  • Walk the promenade on the Manhattan side for the skyline views.
  • Four Freedoms Park at the southern tip is a quiet memorial with a view back toward the UN.
  • The Smallpox Hospital ruins, a Gothic Revival shell from the 1850s, stand on the island’s southern end.
  • You can return by the F train from the island, or go back on the tram.

Add it to a Central Park day

From the park’s southeast corner, the tram station is a short subway or taxi hop east. It makes a good half-day add-on after the Central Park highlights.
